Contributors Guidelines

All contributions must be submitted through the journal’s website. To be eligible for consideration submitted work, in its entirety, must be previously unpublished and not under review or consideration by another publication. JIL receives two types of submissions from authors:

Long papers

Long papers should be 4,000-7,000 words including references.  They should make a contribution to published knowledge in the field by, for example:
  • reporting original information literacy research;
  • looking at theoretical issues in a scholarly way;
  • describing and evaluating a development, programme or initiative relevant to information literacy;
  • critically reviewing some aspect of information literacy, in general, or in relation to a specific type of library or environment or region.

Short papers

Short papers should be 2,500-5,000 words including references.  They may consist of:
  • A case study or action research report;
  • Papers from practice
  • A description of an information literacy initiative
  • A conference report
  • A "tutorial" introduction for students or others to some area of new relevance.

Submission Process

Both types of submission outlined above are reviewed by an international panel of reviewers, with one reviewer per submission. Feedback is given to authors and corrections, improvements and clarifications are suggested.

JIL actively encourages submissions from students who may be writing a dissertation or carrying out research in the Information Literacy field.

Name, title, affiliation and contact details of all authors should be given on the title page and the authors should not be identified anywhere else in the paper. Authors must supply a structured abstract of not more than 500 words this should be set out under 4-6 sub-headings: Purpose; Methodology/Approach; Findings; Research limitations/implications (if applicable); Practical implications (if applicable); and, the Originality/value of paper. Reviews Reviews of books, reports, web sites, software, etc.

Your paper should be submitted online via the journals home page.  You will need to register as an author with the journal before you can upload your  paper.  There is a standard format for your paper.  A template is available.

Reviews

Reviews may discuss appropriateness for the intended target audience, readability, currency, content and overall value. The suggested length for reviews is 500 words.

Commentaries and Response Papers
Commentaries and Response Papers are short (400-500 word) invited pieces, giving a commentary on the state of the art or offering an intuitive insight to the subject are occasionally invited. Such commentaries are reviewed by the editorial board. Short, informal pieces responding to another piece in the journal, such as a commentary or a peer-reviewed paper are accepted; again these are reviewed by the editorial board.
